Formerly the School of Criminology and Penitentiary Science (SWWS), a vocational university for state services, was established in 2018 by the Minister of Justice as the Higher School of Criminology and Penitentiary Science in Warsaw.

The statutory purpose of the university is to educate and train Prison Service officers, officers of other services and civilians. 

The university currently has 760 students, 41 percent of whom are women, and 0.5 percent are foreigners.

84 graduates left the university building last year. In the 2023/2024 academic year, 345 male and female students, including 3 foreigners, began their studies. 

The university employs 83 academic teachers, 26.5 percent of whom are women.
