SWPS University was founded in 1996 as the School of Social Psychology, on the initiative of professors of the Institute of Psychology of the Polish Academy of Sciences - Andrzej Eliasz, Zbigniew Pietrasiński and Janusz Reykowski. The founding function of the university was taken over in 2008. Institute for the Development of Education and the company's CEO Piotr Voelkel.

It provides first- and second-cycle studies, single master's degrees, postgraduate studies and a doctoral school. The university has five branches: in Wroclaw, Poznan, Sopot, Katowice and Krakow.

The university already has nearly 16.8 thousand students, 77 percent of whom are women, and 6.5 percent are foreigners.   

Almost 3 thousand students left the university building last year. In the 2023/2024 academic year, nearly 4.9 thousand male and female students began their studies, including more than 400 foreigners.  

The university employs 437 full-time academic staff, 61.6 percent of whom are women. 

The university's graduates include: Aleksandra Szwed actress and singer, Michal Szpak singer or singer Margaret.
