Description: The University of Gdansk was established in 1970. It was formed from a merger of the Higher School of Economics in Sopot and the Higher School of Pedagogy in Gdańsk; later it also included the Higher Teacher Training College. It is now the largest university in the Pomeranian region. It offers studies at eleven faculties, in fields such as biology, biotechnology, chemistry, oceanography, quantum physics, pedagogy, psychology, law and economic sciences. The University of Gdańsk is achieving significant scientific successes, consolidating its leading position, especially in activities and research related to the sea. The University cooperates in this field with research and scientific centres from almost all countries in the world. Researchers in the areas of biomedical and biomolecular research and the theoretical foundations of quantum technologies are achieving the greatest scientific success. The university currently has almost 20,000 students, 67.2 per cent of whom are women, and 2.6 per cent are foreigners who come from all over the world, including Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, India, China, Azerbaijan, the USA, Norway and the UK. Nearly 5,400 graduates left the university building last year. In the 2023/2024 academic year, more than 9,500 male and female students started their studies, including 265 foreigners. The university employs 1,708 full-time academic staff, almost 56 per cent of whom are women. University of Gdańsk graduates include Aleksander Kwaśniewski - President of the Republic of Poland, Aneta Kręglicka - Polish photomodel, Miss World 1989, Grzegorz Skawiński - Polish singer, guitarist and composer, or Maria Kaczyńska - First Lady since 2005-2010, wife of the President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczyński.
