Description: By virtue of a royal privilege granted by Sigismund III Vasa on 28 October 1611. Jesuit College came into existence as the first university in Poznań. The privilege of King Sigismund III was confirmed by King Jan Kazimierz in 1650 and by King Jan III Sobieski in 1678. On the basis of these privileges, degrees and titles of Master's and Doctoral degrees were awarded in Poznań. It was not until 7 May 1919, 308 years after the formal establishment of the university by the Polish king, that the ceremonial inauguration of the first academic year of the newly established Wszechnica Piastowska, as the University of Poznań was initially called, took place in Poznań. Currently, the university offers studies in 141 fields of study and over sixty specialisations. There are almost 1,200 doctoral students in doctoral studies and at the UAM Doctoral School. The Adam Mickiewicz University of Poznań is one of ten research universities in Poland, which means the implementation of additional tasks, strongly oriented towards the development of scientific research and its internationalisation. The university currently has more than 28,000 students, 68 per cent of whom are women, and 2.6 per cent are foreigners who come from all over the world, including Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, India, China, Azerbaijan, the USA, Norway and the UK. Nearly 6,500 graduates left the university building last year. In the 2023/2024 academic year, more than 12,000 male and female students started their studies, including 869 foreigners. The university employs 2,677 full-time academic staff, almost 50 per cent of whom are women. Prominent figures who have studied within the university's walls include Hanna Suchocka - lawyer and politician, Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland, Jan Kulczyk - entrepreneur, one of the richest Poles during his lifetime, Jan Nowak-Jeziorański - politician, writer, publicist, soldier of the Home Army, Omenaa Mensah - journalist and TV presenter, Roman Giertych - politician and lawyer, or Stanisław Barańczak - poet, translator and literary critic.
