Description:

It is the oldest university in Poland and one of the oldest in this region of Europe. It was founded on May 12, 1364 by Poland's King Casimir the Great. Studium generale - as the University was then called - consisted of three faculties: liberal arts, medicine and law. 

Today, the Jagiellonian University has 16 faculties, including three medical faculties, which returned to unity with the Jagiellonian University in 1993 and form the so-called Collegium Medicum. 

Jagiellonian University already has about 33,000 students, 66 percent of whom are women. The nationality structure has also changed; in addition to students from European Union countries, students from Asia and Africa have appeared, as well as from the new Eastern European countries (Ukraine, Belarus). 

About 8,000 students leave the university building every year. In the 2023/2024 academic year, 14.4 thousand male and female students began their studies. 

Nearly 4 thousand full-time academic teachers teach at the university, 52 percent of whom are women.  

Jagiellonian University invariably tops the lists of the best universities in Poland, and is also included in the most important international rankings.

Prominent figures who have studied within the walls of this oldest Polish university include Nicolaus Copernicus, Jan Kochanowski, Jan III Sobieski, Stanisław Lem, Stanisław Wyspiański, Jan Długosz, Pope John Paul II, Wisława Szymborska.
