The university was founded in 1945. It continued the achievements of several universities from the interwar period - the Lodz Teachers' Institute, the Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences and the Free Polish University. At the beginning of its existence, the University of Lodz had three faculties, humanities, law and economics and mathematics and natural sciences.

Today, it is one of the largest Polish universities. It offers education at 12 faculties and at its Branch Office in Tomaszów Mazowiecki. Students can choose from 100 faculties and 50 postgraduate and MBA courses, as well as 4 doctoral schools. The University of Lodz also has a Publishing House, a Kindergarten, a High School, the British International School of the University of Lodz and a Polish Language Study for Foreigners.

The university currently has almost 22.8 thousand students, 61.2 per cent of whom are women, and 8.6 per cent are foreigners who come from almost all over the world, including Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, India, China, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.

More than 5,500 graduates left the university building last year. In the 2023/2024 academic year, more than 11,000 male and female students began their studies, including 701 foreigners.

The university employs 2019 full-time academic staff, 56 per cent of whom are women.

Prominent figures who have studied within the university's walls include Aleksander Gudzowaty - one of the richest Poles, the main shareholder of the Bartimpex company, Anita Werner - television journalist, Leszek Kołakowski - philosopher, prose writer, publicist, essayist; Marek Belka - politician, Minister of Finance, Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland or Tatiana Okupnik - singer.
