The University of Szczecin was established by a parliamentary act of July 1984 from the merger of the Faculty of Transport Engineering and Economics of the Szczecin University of Technology and the Higher School of Pedagogy. It began its activities in the 1985/86 academic year, dynamically developing the post-war academic tradition and performing an important cultural function in the city and the region.

At present, students have at their disposal about 80 fields of study, conducted on a full-time and part-time basis. Students participate in the work of 160 scientific circles and publish their own journals. The university is home to an academic theater, a choir, the Student Culture Zone, the Academic Athletic Association, NZS, AIESEC and ELSA, among others.

The university has more than 10,000 students, 64 percent of whom are women, and 5.7 percent are foreigners.

More than 2 thousand graduates left the university building last year. In the 2023/2024 academic year, 4.3 thousand male and female students began their studies, including 271 foreigners.

The university employs 959 full-time academic staff, more than 54 percent of whom are women.

University of Szczecin graduates include Joachim Brudzinski - politician and political scientist, Slawomir Nitras - politician and political scientist, Krzysztof Lukaszewicz - film director, screenwriter, Jolanta Kielpinska - geneticist.
