The University of Silesia in Katowice was founded in 1968 as the ninth university in Poland. Although the headquarters of the university's authorities and most of the teaching units are located in Katowice, other faculties and teaching units are also located in other cities of the Silesian province, in Cieszyn, Chorzow and Sosnowiec. The University of Silesia cooperates with foreign universities in scientific research, as well as student exchanges, and has 250 international agreements signed.

At present, the university provides education in 79 fields of study and about 240 specialties conducted in full-time and part-time form at the level of first- and second-cycle studies and uniform master's studies. The university's fields of study are located in the humanities, social sciences, sciences and natural sciences, engineering and technical sciences, theology and art. The University of the Third Age has also been operating at the UŚ since 1983.

The university currently has more than 18,000 students, 66.4 percent of whom are women, and 4.1 percent are foreigners.

More than 4.6 thousand graduates left the university building last year. In the 2023/2024 academic year, more than 6.5 thousand male and female students began their studies, including 308 foreigners.

The university employs 1,724 full-time academic staff, nearly 57 percent of whom are women.

Among the university's most recognizable students are Sports Minister Witold Bańko, President of the Regional Chamber of Commerce in Katowice Tadeusz Donocik, journalist Anita Gargas, writers Wojciech Kuczok and Szczepan Twardoch, satirist Michał Ogórek, singer Renata Przemyk or sports journalist Andrzej Zydorowicz.
