The University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn was established in 1999 as a continuation of the academic tradition of three universities: M. Oczapowski Agricultural and Technical Academy in Olsztyn, the Higher School of Pedagogy in Olsztyn and the Warmian Theological Institute.

The university is an autonomous university.  The structure of the university consisted of 15 faculties, the School of Public Health and the Elk Branch. Students can choose from nearly 80 majors and more than 200 specialties. The university has about 220 scientific circles.

For those with a professional degree of Master of Science, Master of Engineering, Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, or other equivalent, the University offers third-degree - doctoral studies in the following fields: biological sciences, economic sciences, humanities, medical sciences, legal sciences, agricultural sciences, social sciences, technical sciences, theological sciences, veterinary sciences.

The university currently has nearly 15,600 students, 61 percent of whom are women, and 2.8 percent are foreigners.

Four thousand graduates left the university building last year. In the 2023/2024 academic year, nearly 6 thousand male and female students began their studies, including 126 foreigners.

The university employs 1,572 full-time academic staff, of which more than 52 percent are women.

The University of Warmia and Mazury graduates include politicians currently in power in Warmia and Mazury: marshal Gustaw Marek Brzezin, governor Artur Chojecki and Olsztyn Mayor Piotr Grzymowicz. Politicians representing the public in the Sejm: Iwona Arent, Zbigniew Babalski, Janusz Cichoń, Monika Falej, Wojciech Kossakowski, Paweł Papke, Urszula Pasławska, Jacek Protas, Adam Oldakowski, Michał Wypij, Zbigniew Ziejewski, Senate: Lidia Staroń and European Union institutions: Robert Biedroń. Persons known in the world of entertainment: singer and musician Piotr Soloducha of the band Enej, dancer and dance instructor Iwona Pavlović, singer Julia Marcell, writer Mariusz Sieniewicz.
