Wroclaw University of Technology - a public technical university founded in Wroclaw in 1945 thanks to the involvement of researchers from the now-defunct Lviv Polytechnic and Jan Kazimierz University in Lviv, who developed the destroyed buildings of the German Technical College - Technische Hochschule.
At present, the university's 14 faculties and three branches in Jelenia Góra, Legnica and Walbrzych conduct research in 14 disciplines within four scientific fields: engineering and technology, science and natural sciences, medicine and social sciences. Students study in 60 first- and second-level courses, a large part of which are taught in English.
On September 4, 2023, the Faculty of Medicine was solemnly inaugurated at Wroclaw University of Technology.
The polytechnic has nearly 21,000 students, 33 percent of whom are women, and 5.5 percent are foreigners.
Almost 5.4 thousand graduates left the university building last year. In the 2023/2024 academic year, more than 7 thousand male and female students began their studies, including 382 foreigners.
The university employs 2017 full-time academic staff, of which more than 33 percent are women.
Prominent figures who have been educated within the university's walls include Kornel Morawiecki - politician and oppositionist during the communist era, Krzysztof Wielicki - Himalayan mountaineer and alpinist, Leszek Czarnecki - entrepreneur and economist, Maciej Balcar - musician, singer of the band Dżem, Mateusz Morawiecki - politician, prime minister of Poland, or Maja Włoszczowska - mountain biker.
