The history of the University dates back to 1890, when a 3-year Agricultural Study was established at the UJ Faculty of Philosophy. In 1923, the study was transformed into the UJ Faculty of Agriculture. In 2008. The Hugo Kołłątaj Academy of Agriculture in Cracow was granted the status of a University.

The University is a public academic institution, conducting specialized research and educational activities, covering the agricultural, food, forestry and environmental protection and shaping sectors, in all aspects of their functioning, i.e.: natural, technical, social and economic. The University develops and disseminates knowledge, creates innovations conducive to achieving food security and climate neutrality, increasing the competitiveness of the economy based on biological materials and processes, enabling the challenges of society and civilization.

The University of Agriculture is a University of European scope, constantly improving the processes implemented, predisposed to have a special impact on the Central European region.

At present, the University has a total of 6,700 students, 60 percent of whom are women, and 2.2 percent are foreigners.

More than 2 thousand graduates left the university building last year. In the 2023/2024 academic year, more than 2.6 thousand male and female students began their studies, including 59 foreigners.

The university employs 691 full-time academics, almost 50 percent of whom are women.

University graduates include Adam Bachleda-Curus, an entrepreneur and local government official, and Bohdan Smoleń, a comedy actor and cabaret artist.
