The University of Economics in Katowice is one of the oldest universities in Upper Silesia. It was established in December 1936, and on January 11, 1937, the first inauguration of the academic year took place, with dozens of students entering the Faculty of Industrial Organization.

It is also one of the five state universities of economics in the country and the largest university in the region teaching social and economic sciences.

The university currently has more than 8,000 students, 55.6 percent of whom are women, and 2.5 percent are foreigners.

The university building last year saw 2305 graduates leave. In the 2023/2024 academic year, 3949 male and female students began their studies, including 93 foreigners.

The university employs 439 academics, 61 percent of whom are women.

The university's graduates include Teresa Mokrysz - entrepreneur, co-owner of the Mokate company; Hanna Greń - writer, author of detective novels, Prof. Andrzej Klasik - honorary rector of the Karol Godula Upper Silesian Academy of Entrepreneurship in Chorzow, or Szymon Michalek - President of the City of Chorzow.
