Description: The University of the Commission of National Education in Cracow was established on May 11, 1946 as the State Higher School of Pedagogy and began teaching on October 25. In the initial period, it prepared elementary school teachers; the training cycle covered 3 years and ended with a diploma exam. Beginning in the 1949/1950 academic year, it also began training secondary school teachers and operated under a new organizational structure based on departments. Students can currently choose from among the 80 faculties that the university offers. The university's offerings include education in the humanities, social sciences, pedagogy, natural sciences, technology and the arts. This year, six novelties have been added to the offer: applied computer science, production and quality engineering, civil protection and defense, nursing, management and biolinguistics with clinical communication. The Pedagogical University owns the university's astronomical observatory, the highest in Poland, located in the Gorce Mountains, on top of Mount Suhora. The university runs the unique in the country University of Children and Parents, the only Textbook Museum in Poland, offers the University of the Third Age, and is involved in the co-organization of the Małopolska Night of Scientists and the World Entrepreneurship Week in Małopolska. The university currently has 17,200 students, 75.5 percent of whom are women, and 2.3 percent are foreigners. The university building last year saw 3,537 graduates leave. In the 2023/2024 academic year, 8457 male and female students began their studies, including 208 foreigners. The university employs 902 academic staff, 58 percent of whom are women. The university's graduates include: Ewa Drzyzga - journalist and TV presenter, Tomasz Sobczak - photographer or Michal Strzelecki, brigadier general of the Polish Army; commander of the Commandos Military Unit (2016-2021); from July 1, 2022 commander of the 6th Airborne Brigade.
