Description: The tradition of training physical education teachers and instructors of various sports in Katowice dates back to 1952. At that time, the Technical School of Physical Education in Katowice was established. It was later transformed (1957) into the Teacher Study of Physical Education. From this study in 1970, the University of Physical Education in Katowice was established. The university has a Doctoral School in physical culture sciences and twelve first- and second-degree majors, as well as a single master's degree. These include physical education, physiotherapy, management, tourism and recreation, internal security, physical activity in public health, sports and personal trainer with sports dietetics, and physiotherapy in English. The university also conducts multi-profile postgraduate studies and further education courses. The university currently has more than 1,200 students, 45.5 percent of whom are women, and 0.5 percent are foreigners. 781 graduates left the university building last year. In the 2023/2024 academic year, nearly 1.4 thousand male and female students, including 4 foreigners, began their studies. The university employs 215 full-time academic staff, 49 percent of whom are women. Among the graduates of the AWF in Katowice are Justyna Kowalczyk - cross-country skier, Olympic champion, two-time World Cup winner; Artur Rojek - singer and composer, frontman of the band Myslovitz.
