The Wroclaw Academy of Physical Education was established in 1946 as the Study of Physical Education at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Wroclaw. Its co-founder and first Rector was Prof. Dr. Andrzej Klisiecki. In 1950 it was transformed into an independent College of Physical Education, which in 1956 was authorized to confer master's degrees, and then in 1972 was renamed the Academy of Physical Education. Since 1966 it has had doctoral rights, and since 1990 it has had rights to conduct postdoctoral dissertations.

The Academy of Physical Education named after the Polish Olympians in Wroclaw is a two-faculty university with a Faculty of Physical Education and Sports and a Faculty of Physiotherapy, educating at six faculties in the system of full-time and part-time studies - full-time, extramural and postgraduate, as well as doctoral studies. The faculties have full academic rights to confer bachelor's and master's degrees, as well as doctoral and post-doctoral degrees in physical culture sciences.

The university currently has nearly 3,000 students, 55.4 percent of whom are women, and 2.1 percent are foreigners.

719 graduates left the university building last year. In the 2023/2024 academic year, 1,346 male and female students began their studies, including 34 foreigners. 

The academy employs 244 academic teachers, 55 percent of whom are women. 

Famous Polish coaches and athletes, medalists at the Olympic Games, World Championships and European Championships, are associated with the Academy. Its graduates were or are, among others, Kazimierz Górski, Bogdan Cybulski, Zbigniew Pietrzykowski, Józef Zapędzki, Ryszard Szurkowski, Ryszard Witke, Urszula Włodarczyk, Leszek Antonowicz, Mieczysław Łopatka, Jerzy Światek, Czesław Ptak, Wacław Skarul, Wiesław Błach, Rafał Kubacki, Renata Mauer, Tomasz Motyka, Andrzej Piątek, Andrzej Kijowski.
