The Academy of Medicine in Gdansk was established on October 8, 1945. Its history refers to the centuries-old traditions of practicing medicine in Gdansk by surgeons affiliated with the Surgeons' Guild, which had been active since 1454, as well as teaching and medical and natural science research, especially at the Gdansk Academic Gymnasium (Atheneum Gedanense), founded in 1558.
Today, the Medical University of Gdansk (GUMed) is a modern academic center, recognized nationally and internationally. For more than 70 years, the university has been providing high-quality education in all medical professions and conducting scientific research at the highest global level. Scientists are successful in research in areas such as oncology, genetics, testing modern drugs or the use of biomaterials, which have particular applications in the creation of modern bone implants. They are involved in epidemiology, heart disease modeling, and pediatric oncology.
The university currently has more than 6,600 students, 73.6 percent of whom are women, and 13.9 percent are foreigners.
Nearly 1.2 thousand graduates left the university building last year. In the 2023/2024 academic year, more than 1.7 thousand male and female students began their studies, including 112 foreigners.
The university employs 872 full-time academic staff, 61 percent of whom are women.
Gdansk Medical University graduates include Anna Dominiczak - Royal Professor of Medicine (Internal Medicine), University of Glasgow, Vice Chancellor of the University of Glasgow and Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences University of Glasgow (2010-2020). Specialist in Internal Medicine, Hypertension and Endocrinology, medical honorary consultant and member of the Board of Health of NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde Health or Marek Balicki - medical specialist in anesthesiology and psychiatry, politician, long-time parliamentarian, twice Minister of Health. Advisor to the President of Poland (1998-2001).
