The academy was established in 1948 as the Academy of Medicine with one medical faculty and a dental department based in Rokitnica Bytomskaya. A year later, it was renamed the Silesian Academy of Medicine, then the Ludwik Waryński Academy of Medicine of Silesia.

Currently, the university educates medical doctors, dentists, pharmacists, medical analysts, biotechnologists, as well as specialists in public health, emergency medicine, dietetics, nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, cosmetology, neuroscience and medical coaching. In addition to full-time studies, the Silesian Medical University in Katowice also offers part-time studies (evening and extramural). Postgraduate training includes full-time and part-time doctoral studies, as well as training and specialization courses. The University conducts doctoral studies and a Doctoral School.

More than 200 scientific circles, student and doctoral organizations, associations and sports sections are active at the University.

The University cooperates with dozens of foreign universities, including those in Great Britain, Italy, Sweden and the United States.

The university currently has nearly 10,200 students, 74.3 percent of whom are women, and 4.8 percent are foreigners.

2.2 thousand graduates left the university building last year. In the 2023/2024 academic year, more than 2.7 thousand male and female students began their studies, including 60 foreigners.

The university employs 1,344 full-time academic staff, 59 percent of whom are women.

Among the graduates of the Silesian Medical University is Andrzej Sosnierz, a politician and physician.
