Description: The Academy of Medicine in Szczecin was established on March 20, 1948, and was the third university in Szczecin. At that time, only the fourth year of studies was launched, with 60 candidates - many later prominent scientists and didacticians - enrolled. In 1992 it was renamed the Pomeranian Medical Academy in Szczecin, and on August 21, 2010 it became the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. Currently, there are fourteen faculties at PUM in four faculties. The University maintains scientific contacts with renowned foreign centers, including those in the USA, Germany, Italy and Sweden. Particular achievements have been noted in genetics and cancer pathology, as well as in stem cell research. Clinical achievements include procedures in invasive cardiology, transplantology, hand surgery and gastroenterology. PUM provides professional medical services at two teaching hospitals: SPSK No. 1 together with the hospital in Police and SPSK No. 2. The university currently has nearly 5,400 students, 75.5 percent of whom are women, and 10.6 percent are foreigners who come from nearly 30 countries around the world - most from Germany, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. More than 1,000 graduates left the university building last year. In the 2023/2024 academic year, 1.5 thousand male and female students began their studies, including 116 foreigners. The university employs 456 full-time academic staff, more than 64 percent of whom are women. Pomeranian Medical University graduates include Bartosz Adam Arlukowicz, a politician and pediatrician, and Tomasz Grodzki, a physician, surgeon and politician, professor of medical sciences, senator, Speaker of the Senate for the 10th term.
