The historic date of the official opening of the first Maritime School in the reborn Republic became December 8, 1920. On that day, in Tczew, the white and red flag was ceremoniously raised on the mast of the former Female Gymnasium building. The school was inaugurated with two faculties - Navigation and Mechanical Engineering.

The university is currently made up of four thriving Faculties - Navigation, Mechanical, Electrical and Management and Quality Sciences, within which Gdynia Maritime University develops its scientific and didactic activities in nine fields of study, in 42 specialties. All faculties have doctoral rights.

At present, the university has a silent 3,500 students, 29 percent of whom are women, and 3.1 percent are foreigners.

808 graduates left the university building last year. In the 2023/2024 academic year, nearly 1.6 thousand male and female students began their studies, including 63 foreigners. 

The university employs 310 full-time academic staff, more than 42 percent of whom are women. 

Graduates of the Maritime University in Gdynia include Witold Poinc - captain of great sailing, co-founder of the Polish Ocean Rescue, Paweł Baranowski - Polish poet, guide of mountain and kayak tourism, Bogdan Kołodziejski - journalist, traveler, reporter, author of documentaries and TV reports, or Dorota Irvina Arciszewska-Mielewczyk - politician, MP for the Sejm of the 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 10th terms, senator of the 6th and 7th terms.
