The history of the Catholic Academy in Warsaw dates back to the 1960s, so difficult in the life of the Church in Poland. The events of those years caused the Church in the Archdiocese of Warsaw to face the problem of educating at the academic level candidates for the priesthood, namely the alumni of the Metropolitan Seminary of St. John the Baptist.

In Warsaw, there existed and operated at the University of Warsaw the Faculty of Theology, established in 1920, whose students were alumni of the aforementioned Seminary. The situation changed completely after the establishment of the Academy of Catholic Theology by the state authorities in 1954.

It is an ecclesiastical university with state rights, operating on the basis of statutes approved by the Holy See.

It offers master's, bachelor's (canonical), doctoral, post-graduate and courses. Lay people, priests, members of religious orders and institutes of consecrated life can study at the Catholic Academy in Warsaw.

The academy currently has more than 1,000 students, 37.7 percent of whom are women, and 10.6 percent are foreigners.

122 graduates left the university building last year. In the 2023/2024 academic year, 239 male and female students began their studies, including 37 foreigners.

The university employs 54 academic staff, 7.4 percent of whom are women.

The university's graduates include: Czesław Drążek - Jesuit, long-time editor-in-chief of the Polish edition of "L'Osservatore Romano" and professor at the Ignatianum Higher School of Philosophy and Pedagogy in Cracow, co-founder of the Society of Friends of Lepers, Stanisław Królak - press and television journalist, Stanisław Łałowski also known as Stan Lalowski - jazz pianist, Robert Pożarski - musician, singer and researcher of Gregorian chant.
